About Regional Centre:

The Western Himalayan Regional Centre (WHRC) is one of the seven Regional Centres of NIH and is operational at Jammu since January 1990. The area of jurisdiction of WHRC covers the Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and hill regions of Uttarakhand. The Centre has the main focus to carry out field-oriented hydrological studies through close interaction with various State/Union Territory and Central Government departments.

Thrust Areas of Research:

  • Climate Change Impact Assessment
  • Snow, Glacier,and Permafrost Hydrology
  • Cryospheric Processes and Dynamics
  • Cryosphere Hazards &GLOF Assessment
  • Flood and River Basin Modelling
  • Soil Erosion, Mass Movement and Sedimentation Assessment
  • Surface/Groundwater Quantity and Quality Analysis
  • Spring/ Springshed Inventory, Rejuvenation and Management
  • Application of Remote Sensing, GIS &Modelling  in Hydrology
  • Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Strategies
  • Hydrological Network Enhancement and Instrumentation

Vision:

  • Assess climate change impacts on hydrological and cryospheric systems to support sustainable water management and disaster preparedness.
  • Monitor and model Himalayan cryosphere, including snow, glaciers, permafrost, and glacial lakes, using remote sensing, GIS, and hydrological modelling.
  • Evaluate and mitigate cryo-geo-hazards, such as GLOFs, LLOFs, floods, landslides, soil erosion, and sedimentation, through disaster risk reduction strategies.
  • Conduct water quantity and quality assessments to ensure ecological and social sustainability of water resources.
  • Develop, manage, and rejuvenate springs/ springshed inventories to enhance community water resilience in the Western Himalaya.
  • Prioritize catchments for glacier preservation and soil conservation using RS & GIS, while promoting technology transfer and public awareness initiatives.
